Two days ago our Farhan Lalji reported that one of the greatest receivers in CFL history, Geroy Simon was calling it a career. Since Farhans tweet, there have been all kinds of speculation as to why Simon would hang them up now, when as recently as a month and a half ago he indicated that he felt like he could play at least one more year. The rumour getting the most traction is that he wasnt offered enough money by Saskatchewan GM Brendan Taman to make another year worth his while. However, sources very close to the situation said on Sunday night that this decision had nothing to do with money. The recent talks between the Rider GM and Simon went fine and did not factor into his decision. Information which makes sense because in all my discussions with the CFLs yardage leader throughout the years he has never made decisions based on money, and there is no reason to think he would start now. Simon was trending on Twitter shortly after it was known that he was retiring, including tweets from many fans wondering why he wouldnt sign a one day contract with the Lions and hold the press conference in BC, since he played there the majority of his career there and racked up 14,756 of his 16,352 career yards as a Lion. Retiring with the team youve played for the bulk of your career with has become ordinary practice for most athletes in all sports. However, since entering the league with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Simon has been anything but ordinary, and has followed his own path. Last year he played for the Roughriders, and his best game of the season was the most important game of the season, when he had two touchdown catches in the Grey Cup against Hamilton, so he will retire a Rider. As for whether or not he could end up on another roster and play one more year in a different city, a source said as of Sunday night Simon had not heard from any other team in the league. While it seems shocking that teams wouldnt at least contact him to gauge his interest in playing somewhere else, we shouldnt read into the lack of interest too much. First, Simon hasnt made it official, and until papers are filed to the league he is still a Roughrider. Also dont be surprised to hear that No. 81 may be hanging up his jersey, but isnt going to leave football, and that information may have already leaked to the other teams in the league. He still has gas in the tank and could help a young team like Ottawa for instance, and I consider myself one of many who think he could play at least one more year. However, it sounds like hes decided its time to make the transition into the next phase of his life, and once you have retired in your mind you are not going back, so it will be interesting to see what his new role in the game will be. As initially reported, the official press conference will be held sometime this week in Regina, and will mark the end of the playing career of the most productive receiver in CFL history. But as good as Simon was as a player he is even a better person, and will be successful in anything he does in the future. As I mentioned, it sounds like he will stay in football for now, but I know from previous conversations with him that he would be interested in exploring TV and I for one would welcome him with open arms to our team at TSN, if that opportunity ever presented itself. He also has other interests and business partners away from the game, and you can bet there will be lots of open doors in the corporate world for Simon if he chooses to go that route. The defeat leaves the 41-year-old Nestor to concentrate on the mixed-doubles event after winning 12 straight matches and winning Australian titles in Brisbane and Sydney with two different partners. "This was a little bit of a let down, but all credit to them," said Nestor. CHICAGO -- The Pittsburgh Pirates chances of winning the NL Central were dealt a huge blow when the Chicago Cubs rallied for a 4-2 victory on Wednesday behind a three-run homer by Darnell McDonald. Still, the postgame mood in the Pirates clubhouse was anything but sombre. "This is nothing new, the way our season has played out," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "Well continue to battle, to go play. When we get the result we want, we put that one aside and try to go get another one. When we dont get the result we want, we wash that one and get ready for the next game. "We have a day off in Cincinnati and well be ready to hit the gas pedal again on Friday," he said. With three games remaining in the regular season for each team, the Pirates trail division-leading St. Louis by three games. The Pirates, who already have clinched a playoff spot, hold a one-game lead over Cincinnati for the first wild-card slot. The Reds, who also are assured a post-season slot, host Pittsburgh for three games to finish up. McDonald had three hits, including his homer in the sixth inning that put the Cubs ahead 4-1. "Thats one of the things that all of us can learn from right now, is were trying to get where these teams are at that were playing down the stretch," McDonald said. "I think every one of us in here wants to finish the season strong." Pirates starter Francisco Liriano (16-8) certainly wanted a stronger finish. He was over 100 pitches when McDonald came to the plate in the sixth and already had surrendered a pair of doubles to him. Hurdle thought about making a change, but never really gave it much serious consideration. "He wasnt able to get the ball where he wanted on McDonald," Hurdle said. "Theres never a time I dont like Frank on the mound. You always hate to have to go get a guy after the runs are given up. Thats the walk of shame. Thats on me." Jake Arrieta (4-2) allowed one run and four hits for the Cubs. Kevin Gregg allowed an unearned run in the ninth for his 33rd save. The Cubs took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Darwin Barney hitt a one-out double and scored on a single by Anthony Rizzo.dddddddddddd The Pirates tied it in the third when Justin Morneau walked with the bases loaded to score Starling Marte. Arrieta avoided a bigger inning by getting the next batter, Garrett Jones, to ground out. The Pirates wasted other scoring chances. They had a runner on second with two outs in the fifth. Morneau hit a leadoff double in the sixth and advanced to third with one out, but was stranded when Pedro Alvarez grounded out and Tony Sanchez struck out. "If we make three good outs, its a 4-4 game going into the ninth," Hurdle said. "Just by getting outs. Runners on third base with less than two outs is one of the challenges weve had all season. We have to find a way to cash in in those situations. Its tough to keep pitching without a safety net." While the Pirates slipped back in the division race, they do have the safety net of knowing theyll be in a playoff game next week regardless of what happens in Cincinnati. "We just have to go there and play," Liriano said. "Were not going to try to do too much or change anything. We just have to go out there and play, game by game." NOTES: Dale Sveum doesnt know if hell be coming back for a third season as manager of the Cubs. Sveum is under contract to return for 2014, but team president Theo Epstein has said all jobs will be evaluated after another losing season. "Im not going to sit here and lie that youre not wondering whats going to happen in four to five days from now. Thats just human nature," Sveum said Wednesday before the game. Sveum expects to hear about his future shortly after the season ends Sunday. "Thats part of the gig," he said, "is knowing the day after the season." ... Marte stole three bases, the most by a Pirates player since Andrew McCutchen on June 15, 2010. ... The Cubs are off Thursday before opening a three-game series Friday in St. Louis with LHP Travis Wood (9-11) facing RHP Lance Lynn (14-10). ... Pirates RHP A.J. Burnett (9-11) takes on Cincinnatis Homer Bailey (11-11) on Friday.
